Sustainable Procurement in Project Management

Sustainable procurement means buying goods, works and services in a way that delivers value for money while reducing environmental impact and supporting the UK’s legal duty to reach net zero by 2050. This insight explains how to evaluate project objectives against it, and how to respond to the challenges it raises (HM Government, 2019).

Technique Overview

Sustainable Procurement in Project Management Definition

Sustainable procurement is the process of purchasing goods, works and services in a way that achieves value for money on a whole-life basis, not just the lowest price, while reducing environmental impact and generating wider benefit for society, in line with the principle of meeting present needs without compromising future generations (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). In project management, it means building carbon, waste and social value criteria into specifications and supplier evaluation from the outset (International Organization for Standardization, 2017).
